What's art got to do with it?

Photographer Richard Avedon's ruthless eye has closed, dead at 81 but not before leaving behind images that are worth recalling during this presidential campaign season. Avedon photographed the famous and the infamous, the celebrated and the common. He also photographed people such as Hillary Rodham Clinton, Henry Kissinger and John Kerry, the Democratic presidential candidate, those who would fall into a category Avedon spoke of as the first staff photographer employed by The New Yorker. ``I've photographed just about everyone in the world,'' Avedon said. ``But what I hope to do is photograph people of accomplishment, not celebrity, and help define the difference once again.'' Avedon did this. ``The results can be pitiless,'' Time magazine critic Richard Lacayo once noted. ``With every wrinkle and sag set out in high relief, even the mightiest plutocrat seems just one more dwindling mortal.'' This seems a good thing to remember as we choose someone for the most important job in the world.
