    It's a hairy question

Ohio hasn't lost its political sense of humor. OK, maybe it's just the astute (and hirsute?) editors of the Dayton Daily News' and a feature called, most appropriately, ``The Buzz.'' Today's Daily News Web site offers The Buzz addressing, complete with doctored photos, the issue of presidents and facial hair. This is particularly appropriate in this swing state because, as The New York Times' Jamie Malanowksi points out, it was Ohio which last gave the country a president with facial hair - the mustachioed, mutton-chopped William Howard Taft. Since Taft, whose most prominent current genetic heir, Ohio Gov. Bob Taft, is neither good at governing nor growing hair (don't let the bio photo fool you), was president, the United States has elected clean-shaven presidents for nearly a century and will again on Nov. 2. ``We don't necessarily have a lot of confidence in a man with facial
hair,'' CNN political analyst told Malanowski.

Malalanowski points out that ``nearly everyone the United States has gone to war with has had facial hair.'' Hitler. Emperor Hirohio. Ho Chi Minh. And, most recently, Osama bin Laden and Saddam Hussein. (Yeah, but Lincoln and Grant and other great U.S. leaders of a bygone era had facial hair.) Greenfield doesn't care. He just keeps piling names onto the damning list: ``Fu Manchu, Ming the Merciless, Snidely Whiplash, the Iron Sheik - all the bad guys have facial hair.''

And, in the interest of full disclosure, that would include Ohioblog.
