The irony of Ohio's many economies

Talk about timing: The day after Italian eyewear maker Luxottica Group announced it would be adding jobs in the suburban Cincinnati area and taking them away from Northeast Ohio, the Cincinnati USA Partnership issued its annual economic forecast and is whining that ``we're concerned.'' Guess what the economic concern is in Southeast Ohio: Not enough workers to fuel economic growth. This is, of course, the reason that Luxottica is hoping it can convince many of the 800 workers from purchased Cole National Corp. in Twinsburg to move to one of the other Ohios. Is this a crazy swing state or what? It's no wonder that President Bush and Sen. Kerry have to return again and again to appreciate the complexities of this place and those of us who live here. Or, do you think they just want our votes and then will forget us and our economic problems?

    ...but we're still scrappy

Scrap-metal recyclers in the Toledo area tell Blade reporter Mary-Beth McLaughlin that especially steel and iron prices have climbed to near record highs for two reasons: Somewhere in America, the economy is beating with a faster heartbeat than here in the Heart of It All and the Chinese have launched into a building frenzy. Don't forget plastics but remember these words: heavy metal. It's the future.
