    Citizenship part II

Forget the spinners. Check the fact-checkers. Spinners - now known in polite company as Rapid Response Teams - interpret and refine what the presidential candidates said during their first debate. Fact-checkers compare President Bush's and Sen. Kerry's statements against the facts

National Public Radio's Morning Edition had host Steve Inskeep sorting through such statements as whether the Iraqi's have 100,000 trained troops in the field as President Bush said (they do not). Deputy Secretary of State Richard L. Armitage has acknowledged to
Congress that ``some of the forces are `shake-and-bake' trainees, with three weeks of training or less,'' Paul Richter of the Los Angeles Times reports. Kerry exaggerated when he asserted Bush is spending ``hundreds of millions of dollars to research bunker-busting nuclear weapons.'' The Washington Post says the budget is less than $35 million.

You can also check out the Associated Press's fact checks. In the days ahead, there will be more checks with which Ohioans can balance against facts against what the candidates said.
