Who would have guessed it? After the White House and his campaign staff washed President Bush's mouth out with soap for uttering a dirty phrase concerning the war on terror, the president backtracked as if there were no Monday.
Can't blame him.
After he had responded to a question on NBC's Today show regarding the war on terror by stating: ``I don't think you can win it. But I think you can create conditions so that those who use terror as a tool are less acceptable in parts of the world. Let's put it that way.''
Actually, let's not.
Those minding the president's words should receive hazardous duty pay. There is no telling when something out of the man's mouth will blow up on them. This did.
Bush and his supporters have made an issue of John Kerry's inconsistencies in word and deed. Yet here was the president, disavowing months and years of statements about how his troops were going to kick the terrorists' butts. Neither good nor smart.
So on Tuesday in Nashville, Tenn., Bush found himself before just the right audience to rectify his misstatement.
``Make no mistake about it: We are winning and we will win,'' Bush told the 86th annual convention of the American Legion. ``We will win by staying on the offensive. We will win by spreading liberty.''
OK, Ohioblog is going to bed in a moment and will sleep much better for knowing this.
Thank you, Mr. President, for that clarification.
