Mr. President, listen to Mr. Mayor

Akron Mayor Don Plusquellic can tell Bill Clinton a thing or two. Of course, The Mayor, president of the U.S. Conference of Mayors, can tell most people a thing or two and if they are smart, they'll listen.

Clinton underwent quadruple heart bypass surgery Monday at a time when not only his advice but his physical presence in the presidential campaign could help the stumbling Democratic candidate John Kerry. The temptation, Plusquellic told 89.7 WKSU, is to rush back into the fray, not to be girlie-man, as California Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger might put it.

Four days after his own bypass surgery, Plusquellic attempted to climb a hill, an urge that is in the guy's blood. He failed. The effort also set back his recovery, though nothing can actually stop The Mayor, who now feels better than he has in 15 years.

Plusquellic's advice to Clinton: Wait a month, do what the doctors tell you and then pick your spots and make your contributions to the campaign.

Clinton needs to remain in good health. Plusquellic could use his support if he decides to run for governor in 2006, which, if Plusquellic is not a girlie-man, he will.
